Emotional Health Portal shares 3 breathing techniques to calm anxiety
Subject: 3 Ways to Use Your Breath to Cope with Anxiety
Hi everybody!
You'd think you're getting all the oxygen you need because you are
breathing and, even more important, you're alive. I wish this were true. Very
few people are getting enough oxygen. This is affecting your brain and your
life.
Deep breathing is a wonderful way to relax. Yes, to do it means you
need to take a few minutes to focus on your breath. It won't take long and it
can make a tremendous difference in coping with anxiety.
One of the easiest ways to use breath is to simply pay attention to
what you do and count. You can do this at your desk and few people will even
notice what you are doing. Inhale to a count of 4, hold for a count of 4 and
then exhale for a count of 4. Gradually increase the count. The more you do
this the more you will be able to assist in anxiety recovery.
Another method is called alternate nostril breathing. There is a
little technique involved in this method so I have a video here which will show
you exactly what to do.
The last method I want to tell you about is belly or abdominal
breathing. This is how you breathed when you were born. I've included the
following video because the doctor talks about the importance of deep breathing
for the managing of anxiety and depression. You'll learn a little science in
this video.
